Just weeks after closing a hugely successful production of “Hair”, we are excited to announce yet another ambitious production for the fall of 2016--Young Frankenstein, the hit 2007 musical based on the 1974 film of the same name. The show, directed by Otto Layman, will reunite a talented and dynamic staff: musical direction by Dr. Jon Nathan of UCSB; Christina McCarthy, Acting Chair of UCSB Dance (who will make a return to SBHS after choreographing Pippin earlier this year); along with Bonnie Thor who also will return as the costume designer tasked with bringing Transylvania to the SBHS stage. Technical direction will once again be in the capable hands of Jonathan Mitchell. After this year’s season of Pippin and Hair, musicals that shared a darker undercurrent, the department will switch gears to produce a comedy that promises sidesplitting humor, great songs, and an elaborate set—complete with Dr. Frankenstein’s laboratory.
The show follows the plot of the film closely, telling the story Frederick Frankenstein (pronounced “Fronk-en-steen”), the Grandson of the infamous monster-creating scientist Victor Von Frankenstein. When Frederick gets word of his grandfather’s passing he travels to Transylvania to work out the details of his grandfather’s estate. There is he is greeted by his soon to be side-kick, the hunchbacked Igor (pronounced “Eye-gore”), and a leggy lab assistant, Inga (pronounced normally). After traveling to his grandfather’s estate, and finding the secret laboratory behind a revolving bookcase, he finds himself in the same shoes as his grandfather before him. The show includes a gut-busting script, and an upbeat, rollicking score by the show’s creator, Mel Brooks (known for his films such as The Producers and Blazing Saddles). Memorable songs include “Roll in the Hay,” “Together Again” and Irving Berlin’s classic “Puttin’ on the Ritz.”
The production team is already knee deep in preparations for the show, and are ready to jump right in when the new school year begins in late August. Auditions will be held during the first week of school, on Wednesday, August 24 at 3:30pm in the theatre. To sign up, select a time slot on the theatre callboard starting August 22. Over the summer prospective actors should prepare thirty-two bars of a song from a musical to sing at the audition. Callbacks will be held on August 25, with the cast list being posted on Friday August 26. For more information please see the callboard outside the theatre office.
